A recipient of the Human Rights Watch Hellman-Hammett Journalism Prize (2000) and the Novib-PEN Award (2005); I have fourteen years' work experience as a print and electronic journalist, editor, publisher and writer.
I wrote for and edited some newspapers in Sierra Leone and was proprietor of a local newspaper, Tribune of the People newspaper. I carried out radio production work with and had publications in various academic and media institutions in Germany, Sierra Leone and South Africa.
Also, I made numerous presentations at a range of international conferences and seminars in The Gambia, Germany and England; on issues ranging from human rights and conflict to peace and development. Last September, I presented the following Paper Creating independent media platforms and institutions in high-risk, low-resource environments at the Africa Regional Forum for Media Development in Grahamstown, South Africa. Earlier in June of the same year, I presented another Paper at Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum in Bonn, Germany.
I was stringer with the BBC Network Africa, an Online Editor with Expotimes newspaper and a reporter with the English Service of Radio Deutsche Welle.
In summer 2006 I taught a module, The Interview at the International Institute for Journalism Berlin Brandenburg, in Berlin, Germany.
From September 2006 up till present, I am Programming/Radio Coordinator with the United Nations Radio in Sierra Leone. During this time, I trained forty young people as radio reporters who reported on the parliamentary and presidential elections held in 2007; and a further twenty-six to report the local government elections scheduled in 2008. On a regular basis, members of staff receive training on the job from me.
In my current capacity, I also produce and present features, conduct interviews, engage relevant government agencies and the civil society in promoting peace and democracy, anchor political discussions and news programmes that seek to respond to peace building efforts in Sierra Leone.
I supervise the content, duration, timeliness and format of all aspects of radio production with regards to public service announcements, news stories, features and documentaries as well as editorial sections of the radio unit and ensure coverage of activities related to peace and development as well as noteworthy political, social and cultural events.
My master's degree in International Law and another in Intercultural Conflict Management; earned at universities in Kiev (1995) and Berlin (2005) respectively, plus my rich travelling background (including conducting research in Cambodia), are among the knowledge and experiences that guide my journalistic skills.
