  4. Congradulations on YOUR new President?


    - I was stunned when I walked into a lift this morning. Inside the lift, there were three white Afrikaaners. One of them looked at me and said"Congradulations on your new president". I was stunned by this remark and did not say anything. The other two guys did not say anything either. The man got off one floor before i did and the other Afrikaaner said" that man must understand that we are not all politicians. We are ordinary workers trying to earn a living". I smiled at this comment and wished I had responded the same way to the offensive man who made the comment about the president.     Yesterday, thousands of South Africans went to various venues to celebrate the victory of the ANC. This pre-election celebration is a practice that is common with every election in South Africa. The African National Congress normally hosts victory parties throughout the country before the actual elections. - Going back to what happened yesterday, I forgot that there was the Siyanqoba (loosely translated as victory) celebration. I woke up to find the streets deserted and began to wonder what could be happening.   6. Who benefits from the Mass Action Campaigns


    - The normally vibrant and busy Johannesburg is at a stand-still today. Some businesses are closed, hawkers are on a day's leave and minibus taxis are not creating havoc on the city's roads. Many workers have put their tools down following Cosatu ( Congress of South African Trade Union)'s call for a National strike. This strike was preceded by mass actions in all the South African provinces. According to some sources, the action strike yielded different results in different areas.
