Tarime residents resort to drainage water

    In Tarime town hundreds of women and children are being forced to fetch water in the road's drainage system citing lack of reliable water sources.

    This week the Voices of Africa witnesses scores of women and children fetching water from the drainage system from one of the major roads in the fast growing town of Mara region.

    ‘There is big problem of water here in Tarime town. We have been fetching water from pits whose infrastructure is linked with latrines and that is why we are looking for other option’, Mrs Naumi Marwa says.

    The Managing Director for Tarime Urban Water and Sewerage Authority Mr Sebastian Nshimwa declined to comment when contacted by Voices of Africa to do so.

    But one of the local leaders who wished not to be named admitted that water was not safe for domestic use, promising to call a public meting to educate people not to fetch the water from the drainage system.

    It is estimated that 75 per cent of the over 60,000 population in Tarime town has no access to safe and clean water. This town is also prone to waterborne diseases including cholera and typhoid.
