A mobile phone operator Vodacom has announced plans to expand its subscribers in Tanzania. Vodacom Tanzania managing director Dietlof Mare declared the company's ambition is to reach over 10 million subscribers. Vodacom is now subscribed to more than 8.5 million phones in Tanzania.

“We are market leaders and our goal is to remain in number one position in terms of the number of subscribers, quality of services provided and the value for money”, he said in Dar es Salaam.
He was speaking at the firm’s 10th anniversary; Mare described Vodacom’s 10-year-old operation as “rewarding, exciting and highly challenging”.
He said his company is now leading telecom services provider with lowest cost and wide range of services. The development was made after investing heavily in technology including GSM, Edge, HSPA, GPRS-H, 3G and WiMAX, he noted.
However, the firm’s challenges over the last 10 years include poor transport infrastructure and erratic power supply, Tanzania Daily News reported.
The CEO also told that its money transfer service M-PESA is now getting more popularity. He pointed out that 5.4 million people have registered and has so far held more than 20 million transactions.
Mobile subscribers in Africa have reached 448.1 million representing a 20% rise, according to a latest report from Ovum research in 2010. In 2008, the figures stood at 373 million subscribers meaning an additional 75 million new people have been recorded in just one year.
The number of mobile subscribers in Kenya is expected to make wonderful growth to 21 million by the end of the year. Mobile phones have also become popular way to transfer money, such as services known as Sahal and Zaad in Somalia, which allows you to transfer money.
At least six million customers use M-Pesa service, which allows people to transfer and save money in Kenya.
