Speaking via satellite from Liberia to a global dialogue taking place in Tanzania, President Johnson said Rwanda can boast of the world’s highest number of women in parliament standing at 56.2%.

She called on women to work hard especially at school to create a conducive environment for them to take up more leadership positions across the continent. “Girls should work hard at school. You should be strong enough to overcome all the challenges that come your way. Importantly, you must show that you can do it,” she urged.

President Sirleaf also entreated women leaders to develop leadership strategies that will inspire and enable more women to take up leadership positions.

The delegates who had gathered at the Tanzania Global Development Learning Centre (TGDLC) in Dar es Salaam echoed President Sirleaf’s concerns and urged the political leadership in Africa to devise specific programmes for the promotion of women.

Tanzania’s Minister for Industries, Trade and Marketing, Dr Mary Nagu and the Minister of State in the Vice President Office responsible for Environment Dr. Batilda Burian participated in the dialogue dubbed “Uncovering Barriers to Women’s Political Leadership.”

“Women should be given opportunities to excel just like men do. Governments should take affirmative action to ensure that women’s rights are protected and enhanced,” Dr Burian said.

Asked what she could refer to as the most successful thing she has done as the first female President in Africa, President Sirleaf said she was proud of turning around the gloomy image of Liberia and the installation of a sense of hope to Liberians and the world as a whole.

The dialogue was organized by Colloquium Women’s Dialogue Forum in collaboration with Global Development Learning Centres. The countries which participated in the live session were Tanzania, Liberia, Egypt, Indonesia and Sri Lanka.
