Sudan: Attacks on foreigners loom

  1. AfricaNews monitoring desk
Brutal attacks on foreigners loom in Sudan if the International Criminal Court continues with its case against Sudan's president Omar al-Bashir, a top official revealed. He said "outlaws" are outraged at the ICC's decision to issue an arrest warrant for al-Bashir on genocide charges in Darfur.
    Omar Hassan al-Bashir
Diplomatic efforts by Khartoum to get the case deferred have so far failed, the BBC reported. The head of Sudan's National Security and Intelligence Service, Salah Gosh, said they could not predict the reactions of "outlaws" who could target foreigners in the wake of a decision by the ICC.

According to state media, Gosh accused the ICC chief prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo of being a political activist and said the court's decision would be political not legal.

In July 2008, Ocampo called for an arrest warrant to be issued against President Bashir, accusing him of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity for alleged atrocities committed in the Darfur region.

The ICC judges are expected to make a decision about the arrest warrant by the end of January. Over the last few days, senior government officials have stepped up their criticisms of Britain, America and France, who they accuse of conspiring against Sudan and manipulating the ICC.[\html]

Chief prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo may be right.
However, it should be noted that the alleged atrocities committed in the Darfur region cannot be entirely blamed on Bashir.
Neighbouring countries and the International Community looked the other way when Sudan (Read Darfur) was sinking deeper and deeper into this abyss.
With the hold in which african leaders have shown to have on their citizenry, care should be taken in order not to turn this african country into another failed state, while seeking justice for the victims of the Darfur genocide.

So ,if I understand correctly Phille, the atrocities in Darfur are partly caused by the International Community? I find this a strange way of reasoning.
