Spain rejects demand to free Somali pirates

  1. Spain government refused to free two pirates facing court in Madrid as Somali pirates holding Spanish boat and 33 crew members demanded to release.
Deputy Defence Minister Constantino Mendez said on Friday the two pirates were detained in Madrid and accused them hijacking of Spanish boat on OCT. 2 in the Indian Ocean. Adding "The situation is not negotiable"
The Defence Ministry told the pirates holding the Alakrana took three crew members ashore to Somalia on Thursday.
The wives of two crew members who talk to their husbands Thursday says the pirates are asking for the release of two pirates in custody in Madrid as to get back the boat and crew.
On Thursday night, the captain of the Alakrana, Ricardo Blach told Spanish television the pirates had threatened to kill the three members of the crew if there was no progress in releasing the two men.
"If in two days there are no signs that those two Somalis are being sent back here, they are going to kill them (the three crew members) and immediately take another three hostages. This is a lottery," Blach said.
Blach said "If you saying anything to them, they put a pistol to your forehead".
Somalia has not had an effective government since warlords overthrew dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991.
