South Africa now BRIC full member

    The Republic of South Africa (RSA) is now a full member of the Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) blog. Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said the group plans to invite RSA leader, Jacob Zuma, to its meeting to be held next year in Beijing, China.

    During a phone conversation with his South African counterpart, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, Yang said the Chinese President Hu Jintao believed RSA’s accession would promote the development of BRIC and enhance the cooperation of emerging market economies. China holds the current chairmanship that rotates amongst BRIC members.

    On behalf of the South African government and President Zuma, Nkoana-Mashabane said: "I would like to express our sincere appreciation towards President Hu's invitation."

    The report also noted South Africa was ready to step up communication and coordination with China and other BRIC members for mutually-beneficial cooperation.

    President Hu's letter has been forwarded by Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Wu Hailong to Bheki Langa, South African Ambassador to China, Xinhua added.
