The ruling All Peoples Congress (APC) and The Opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) The Peoples Movement for Democratic Change( PMDC), announced their commitments during an event organized by Campaign for Good Governance, a civil society body.

In his remarks Mohamed L. Bangura, APC Organizing Secretary, expressed his appreciation for bringing the three political parties together.

“This is one big step in achieving peaceful and free local council elections come July 5”, Koroma said. He dismissed claims that his ruling APC party has been intimidating and harassing political candidates ahead of July 5 and pledged his party’s commitment to a peaceful election.

On his part Alhaji Ibrahim Koroma said the APC is guilty of harassing and intimidating opponents. Alhaji however noted that his SLPP stands by the teachings and principles of democracy and therefore welcomes women’s participation in the decision making process.

Sierra Leoneans will be heading to the polls on July 5 to elect local council representatives and mayor of the Freetown city municipality. Political clashes were reported last weekend between supporters of the ruling APC and SLPP in the rich diamond district of Kono.

It could be recalled that the ruling APC party won the presidential elections last year in a tight race against former ruling SLPP. The election was widely certified as free by international bodies but frequent clashes were reported in the capital and elsewhere.
