Senegalese music icon appointed culture minister

  1. Buya Jammeh, AfricaNews reporter in Dakar, Senegal
Senegalese music icon Youssou Ndour has been appointed as the West African country's minister for culture and tourism. The world music icon is one of the twenty five selected members of the new Senegalese cabinet, which also include seven women.
    Youssou Ndour
The announcement of President Macky Sall's new government was made Wednesday night, two days after his inauguration ceremony which coincided with the his country’s 52nd independent anniversary.

One of Africa's most recognised artists, Ndour sent shockwaves through the music industry when he announced in January he was giving up performing to run for president amid rising tension over the incumbent's bid for a third term in office.

Ndour jumped to the forefront of an opposition campaign going as far as the restive Casamance to lobby for Macky Sall to unseat Wade and was often seen at protests addressing the crowd, or making an appearance as stones and tear gas flew.

Earlier this year, Ndour himself launched a failed bid for the presidency and later threw his support behind Sall.

Senegal's new president won a runoff election by a large margin of 65 percent of the total votes cast, ousting an incumbent Abdoulaye Wade of 12 years rule.

Ndour, had turned in an application to run for president but was disqualified due to a lack of valid signatures.
Sall appointed allies in key positions such as home affairs, justice, foreign affairs, communication and education.

Banker Amadou Kane, former head of the Senegalese branch of French bank BNP was named minister of the economy.
