Senegal Prime Minister Cheikh Hadjibou Soumare resigned on Thursday for 'personal reason.' President Abdoulaye Wade has accepted his resignation and has named a replacement. The new PM, Souleymane Ndene Ndiaye, is a party stalwart and known to be more politically astute than Soumare.

"At the cabinet meeting this morning (Thursday), I offered my resignation and that of the government," Cheikh Hajibou Soumare told reporters in the capital Dakar, adding that he had stepped down for personal reasons.

Ndene Ndiaye was previously minister for maritime economy and fishery. President Wade’s party suffered a massive loss in local government elections which was conducted in March this year. Political pundits observed that the elections result was a mere expression of dissatisfaction of Wade administration and the struggles his people are faced with in recent times.

The opposition coalition Bennoo Siggil Senegal won in key regions including the capital Dakar. Many suggested the Soumare resignation will force Wade to name a new government ‘which was long over due’

Wade was elected in 2000, ending four decades of Socialist Party rule since independence from France in 1960. He was re-elected in 2007 with over 50 percent of first-round votes and his second term is due to end in 2012.
