Kemo Cham is a Gambian journalist with four years experience in both print and online media. He holds two certificates in Basic Journalism and Ethics, and Newsroom Management from the Commonwealth Press Union Media Trust (CPU Media Trust) in London, UK. In addition, he has a certificate in Level 1 (introductory) Chattered Accounting Technician (CAT) from Jollof Tutors in Serekunda, Gambia. He also pursued a four year degree program at the University of The Gambia in Biology and Agriculture, from which he is yet to graduate. Cham got into journalism proper (i.e, after presiding over the establishment and editing two different newsletters at the University of the Gambia) by joining the privately owned Today Newspaper in Banjul, where he served as editor/reporter. He presided over the short-lived column of 'The Hot Spot' at Today Newspaper, a weekly column that discussed issues affecting the society. Mr Cham later joined the Daily Observer, while still a student leader - as president of the University of the Gambia, which position he held concurrently as president of the National Union of Gambian Students. In addition to been media representative for Global Unification International Gambia Chapter, an international humanitarian NGO, he also served as media representative for an NGO-CSO anti-tobacco alliance, which he would represent at the Conference of the Parties (COP3), in November 2008, in Durban South Africa, where he underwent a short training on reporting tobacco consumption, effects and distribution. At the Daily Observer, Kemo Cham was employed as proofreader/editor, subsequently rising through the ranks to become news editor, deputy editor-in-chief and finally editor-in-chief. Parts of his responsibilities as editor-in-chief of the Daily Observer, in addition to ensuring the daily production of the editorial contents of the paper, included reporting on presidential matters. Prior to this, he was chief editorial writer for the Daily Observer. Additionally, Kemo Cham anchored and wrote the following columns at the Daily Observer: 'Youth Matters', discussing issues about the youth; 'Society', discussing a diverse range of issues concerning the society; 'Health Matters', concerning health issues; 'Profile', highlighting the biography and achievement of successful individuals in society who have impacted the lives of the ordinary citizens. A registered member of the Gambia Press Union, Kemo Cham writes on diverse issues, ranging from Politics, Business, Health, and Environment to sports. He is co-founder and editor-in-chief of a Gambian owned online newspaper, JollofNews.
