    East African entrepreneurs have been granted an international platform to showcase their products with their entry into the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards. In the East African edition, the prestigious business awards are open to applicants from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Ethiopia.

    According to Ernst & Young (E&Y) the awards encourages entrepreneurial spirit among those with prospective and recognizes the contribution of people who inspire others with their vision, leadership and achievement.

    In an interview with Africa News, Ms. Hannah Njoroge the E&Y Business Development Coordinator in Kenya said the awards had been running for over 24 years and that the region had been included for the first time.

    “Kenya and the rest of East Africa are the new candidates in the awards which are open to both private and public companies from all over the world,” Ms Njoroge said.

    Over 8,000 entrepreneurs from more than 140 cities and 50 countries worldwide have participated earlier in the awards.

    The East African edition of the awards involves two categories with the first being masters which is open to businesses that are over 10 years old and have a turnover of $50million (Ksh4 Billion).

    The second is the Emerging category which is open to companies that have been in operation from between three to seven years and have a turnover of $5 million or Sh.400 million.

    Ms Njoroge clarified that the winners in the East African edition will have an opportunity to participate in the World Entrepreneur of the Year Awards in Monte Carlo Monaco.

    According to her, the selection criteria for the nominees include; outstanding financial performance, innovation, employee relations and business focus for the future among others.

    “The awards are an international marketing platform for the nominees who get the opportunity to meet with other movers and shakers in the business world” Mr Njoroge stated.

    She also noted that more women had come out in the open to participate in the awards which was an indication of the growing entrepreneurial spirit in women.
