Sierra Leone and the People’s Republic of China have enjoyed bilateral relationships since China, the world fastest growing economy decided to set up an embassy in Freetown over 30 years ago. China assisted Sierra Leone in the construction of most of the country infrastructure including the national stadium, army headquarters, ministerial buildings and assistance in the agricultural sector.

China has invested over $300 million in recent times but most important among its investments is the Guoji industrial factory in the east end of Freetown which specializes in the assembly of tricycles and heavy machinery.

A senior Chinese embassy official was quoted to have said in Freetown that both China and Sierra Leone are developing countries while adding that there is much to be learnt from each other. “There are potentials in many areas and President Koroma’s visit will strengthen the personal relationship, cement the relationship between the two leaders and the visit will start a new stage in the existing bilateral relationship.” The official anticipated that Koroma’s visit to China “will also bring success in respect of trade and economic corporation.”

Koroma’s is expected to visit other cities in China during his stay.
