S. African wins CNN Journalists award

    South Africa's Samantha Rogers scooped the CNN/Multichoice African Journalist award for 2010 for her story focusing on plights of albinos in Tanzania. Samantha works with South Africa's e.tv. This was Samantha's second time to win this ward. She first won it in 2001.

    The awards giving ceremony held in Uganda over the weekend were presided over by Uganda’s President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at the Victoria hall, Kampala Serena Conference Center.

    Samantha’s story - Curse of the Nobody People- centers on the plights of Albinos in Tanzania who are being killed for their body parts, to be used in witchcraft acts.

    She lamented what she called untold suffering and stigmatization, which albinos in Tanzania and Burundi go through.

    Fifteen other journalists won awards in different categories including digital Journalism category, which was the first of its kind since these awards started in 1995.

    Speaking at the occasion, President Museveni petitioned African journalists to use their journalism to empower Africans develop. He also warned them against abusing their freedom of the press.

    The CNN/Multichoice African Journalist award for 2009 was won by John-Allan Namu of Kenya. Africanews reporter Fredrick Mugira was one of the winners of 2009 awards. He won in the Tourism and Travel category for his story- Ridding a Boda Boda- which appeared in South Africa’s Mail and Guardian.
