    South Africa's President Jacob Zuma is climbing the popularity polls according to a marketing and social insights firm.

    TNS Research Surveys, one of the most well-known research companies in South Africa, said that Zuma’s 100-day approval rating was currently sitting at 58% for November 2009. This is up from an average of 38% for 2008.

    Zuma’s rating was still below the high reached by former president Thabo Mbeki of 66% in both 2004 and 2005. However, Mbeki’s end of term rating of 34% when the ruling African National Congress decided to recall him as president, is lower than Zuma’s poorest rating.

    The survey showed that ‘black’ South Africans were the most positive towards Zuma, with 75% believing the president is doing a good job. Amongst ‘white’ South Africans, Zuma was also recording positive strides with approval ratings increasing significantly from 4% November 2008 to 22% November 2009.

    The hands-on president is only performing poorly in the Western Cape, which is a traditional Democratic Alliance stronghold. The DA is the second biggest party in South Africa.

    The president, with his enigmatic dancing and singing was also performing better amongst the younger population. Overall 63% of those polled under 34 approve, while only 44% of those over 50 approve.
