SA 2009: Confederation cup update

    It was a day of contrasts on the opening day of the FIFA Confederations Cup SA 2009. Whereas the hosts and Iraq played out a goalless draw in Johannesburg, Spain put five past New Zealand in Rustenburg. Striker of Spain, Fernando Torres was the toast of his country for hitting a record-breaking hat-trick.

    Not only was the game between the hosts and Iraq the first match of a FIFA tournament to take place on South African soil, it was also the match which introduced the vuvuzela to a global audience.

    Millions of people all over the world heard the sound of the instrument being blown by the majority of the crowd, which added a different dimension to the already colourful atmosphere at Ellis Park.

    African champions Egypt will play their South American counterparts, Brazil, on Monday in a game that is expected to bring out the best of soccer action. Likely to start for the Egypt team are El Hadari, Gomaa, Moawad, Said Ahmed, Said, Fathi, Abd Rabou, Shawky, Hassan, Aboutreika and Zidan.

    Brazil is also expected to start Julio Cesar, Dani Alves, Lucio, Juan, Kleber, Felipe Melo, Elano, Silva, Kaka, Luis Fabiano, Robinho.

    Later on Monday, the United States of America will play current world champions, Italy, in another epic encounter.
