SADC leaders arrive in Botswana


  1. GABORONE – Leaders of Southern African Development Community (SADC) have since started arriving in Gaborone, Botswana this afternoon for a special SADC Summit. So far South African President, Jacob Zuma has arrived with Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe expected to follow suit tomorrow morning.
    The summit is expected to discuss among others the political situation in the region, with Madagascar and Zimbabwe political crisis topping the list. The leaders are also expected to talk about regional infrastructure development as well as economic integration processes. The summit is
    The head of states meeting follows that of the SADC Council of Ministers which ended today (Friday 29th November).
    While in Gaborone, the SADC leaders are expected to officially open the new SADC Headquarters situated in Gaborone’s Central Business District (CBD). Representatives of regional development partners and International Cooperating Partners (ICPs), from both government and non-state actors, thus, business sector and nongovernmental organization umbrella bodies have been invited to witness this historic event in the life of SADC.
    According to a press release from SADC, the SADC Headquarters was constructed under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) between SADC and Bongwe Investments (Pty) Ltd and SADC Secretariat staff relocated into the building towards the end of 2009.
    It is built on an 11 343 m2 prime land in the new CBD generously availed by the Government of the Republic of Botswana through a ninety nine (99) year-lease agreement signed on May 02, 2007 between SADC and the Government of Botswana.
    Before then, since its foundation in 1980, the SADC Secretariat was housed in an excellent four storey building in the Government Enclave that was also generously availed to SADC by the Government of Botswana.
