Rwanda: Opposition figure found dead

    A Rwandan opposition leader was found dead on Wednesday near the border with Burundi, his party and police have said. The vice president of unregistered Democratic Green Party Andre Kagwa Rwisereka who had been missing for a day was found as his head had been completely detached from his body.

    His colleagues say that Kagwa who was found on the banks of river Mukula in the Southern Province may have been targeted for his political ambition.

    "We are extremely shocked and worried. Personally I am worried because in the past I have also received phone calls from people threatening to kill me before elections," said the party’s president Frank Habineza.

    “We have called for the police and the government of Rwanda to find out the cause of his death,” he added.

    Police spokesperson has confirmed the death but suggested that robbery might kill the opposition leader.

    "People who saw him that night say he had a lot of money," said police spokesman Eric Kayiranga.

    Rwisereka's death comes in the wake of increased violence ahead of Rwanda's presidential elections in August.

    The President of Rwanda Paul Kagame who is running for a second term promised free and fair elections. The elections will be the second presidential polls held since the 1994 genocide in which 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed.
