Paratroopers ask for special recognition

    SALIMA.

    Malawi Defence Force's (MDF) paratrooper wing has officially asked headquarters to erect a cenotaph. The structure will serve to remind and remember soldiers and all of fellow paratroopers who died during training and in action.

    Colonel George Jaffu, Office Commanding for the maroon berrets based at Senga-Bay in the lakeshore district of Salima, said he felt the cenotaph will also help drum up camaradere and a spirit of hardwork in other paratroopers.

    "We wish to put it on record that this gesture will improve morale and instil more selfelessness and commitment to die for our country," he told the gathering that included Deputy Defence Force Commander Lieutenant General Ernest Ntonya.

    Paratroopers were conducting an open day on Sunday where among other activities soldiers ejected from both low and high flying aircraft. They also demonstrated mock raids and physical exercises.

    Gen. Ntonya said he would get the request futher for authorities to decide.

    Para Open Day was set aside to showcase readiness and alertness of the unit in both war and peacetime.

    The MDF has 9 Battalions.
