Oshodi Lagos: 'Take me out of this dump'

'Take me out of this dump', yells the woman in the photo the photographer. She is one of the thousands sellers in the Oshidi market in Lagos. This city may be booming in terms of investment and employment opportunities. Here life is harsh. Overcrowded, trash every where, high crime rates and yellow buses (molues) producing thick, black smoke continuously.
A little hope nevertheless: Last week the Worldbank stated that it invests 200 million dollar in the renewal of nine slum communities in Lagos. Lagos State itself is investing in infrastructure projects on a large scale as well.

Until Lagos picks the fruits of these initiatives: Another woman at the Oshodi market: ‘It is a shame we work here. We can not afford to be out there in neat super market places.’

lagos will always be lagos. i once met a lagosian, who longed to return to the city, because according to him, kaduna, another city in northern nigeria, was too slow for him. i think a good number of lagosians love their city in all of its present splendour
