Oh no! Delay in delivery emergency turbine

  1. Monday 9 October 2006, by PowerNell. Today a 22 MW gas turbine was expected to arrive in the country. This turbine was supposed to ease our power rationing by mid-October. The turbine however is still in North Carolina, U.S.A., as supplier Richmond states the contract does not include air freight. For us humble Tanzanians this means continuing power rationing. What a desillusion. People are losing their patience a bit. Today it is three weeks ago that the people of Tanzania had daytime power.

    Richmond

Richmond wants an advance payment from the Tanzanian government of 10 million dollars for the air freight charges. Apparently the contract was not clear on this point. The report in today"s Daily News was not very clear, but it seems that there were two different contracts with different specifications and different suppliers: General Electrics and Pratt & Whitney. However already in September the Tanzanian media reported that Richmond failed to secure a bank guarantee, so it is suspected that Richmond "does not have the financial capability to deliver" (source: editorial Daily News, October 9, 2006).
Richmond is supposed to supply Tanzania with an extra 100 MW before the end of the year. The contract was signed June 23, this year. In the first phase 22 MW would be provided. The total costs are Tsh 172.8 billion (source: The East African, August 2006).

    Three weeks now...

I would love to hear some music on a Sunday morning. I would love to have a decent cup of coffee in my own house. I would love to have a fan running in the afternoon, now that it"s getting hotter every day. I would love to be able to make copies in the place where I usually make copies. I would love to do my laundry at daytime. I have only one pair of bedlinen, if I can"t do my laundry at daytime, where should I sleep on? Okay, okay, we will find a solution for that, as we find a solution for everything, but it is a lot of thinking. ONE DAY A WEEK, please give me power one day a week. No, give me power ONE MORNING A WEEK. And please let it be a weekday.
