Nigerian poll: Imo incumbent suffers defeat

    The incumbent governor Ikedi Ohakim of Imo State, south eastern Nigeria was on Friday voted out of office following the supplementary poll conducted in some local governments after an earlier poll was declared inconclusive in the state.
    Rochas Okoroacha of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA was declared winner of the Imo governorship election after beating Ohakim with a margin of over forty thousand votes.

    APGA had garnered over three hundred and thirty six thousand votes to defeat Ohakim's ruling People's Democratic Party with a little over two hundred and ninety thousand votes. Candidates from around 19 political parties contested for the governorship seat of the south eastern Nigerian State.

    Speaking on the victory of Rochas Okorocha, former Minister of Information and Communications, Professor Dora Akunyili who had narrowly lost a senatorial election in Anambra state commended the courage of the people of Imo State for ensuring the victory of APGA.

    Other Nigerians have been reacting on the emergence of the philanthropist Rochas Okorocha as the winner of the Imo State governorship election.

    ''I've been monitoring the antecedents of this man called Rochas and in this election; he seems to be the most preferred. I'm optimistic that he is going to turn around Imo State...I think Imo needs someone that understands the plight of the masses and not some individual governing on all the Media platforms. We wait for you Rochas," Mathew posted in the comments section of the online edition Nigerian based NEXT newspaper.

    Okorocha and other winning candidates in the just concluded Nigerian general elections are expected to be sworn in by May 29.
