A Nigerian artist Gerald Chukwuma is exploring the world and creativity of arts by applying arts into the making of furniture with African and contemporary designs.

“Cars are getting finer because of the arts in them, the formica, the beauty of the colours, these are artistic works, so I thought to myself what do I do as an artist, If I do a chair as an artist, it must be different, the aesthetics will have an artistic value, it will be different from what any carpenter will do,” Chukwuma told AfricaNews. “So it inspired me to start to produce furniture.”
The artist, who said artistic furniture making has been around for some time, described his furniture works as afro contemporary. He said “it is still contemporary but, it has that afro touch that is artistic so we don’t lose our roots, but it can fit in anywhere in the world and not be called Africa.”
How about patronage from the buying public? “Response has being fine, people have been surprised at what we can produce,” said Chukwuma. “We are making plans to expand so that we can do the thing better”
He said the concept of turning arts into furniture is still in the drawing stage and added he hoped to acquire machines that can make his finishing perfect looking.
Advice to aspiring artists
Chukwukuma who graduated with a first class in painting at the Nsukka Art School, University of Nigeria, Nsukka said passion and consistent practice remain important factors in succeeding in the art world.
“Kelechi Amadi is an example, he read law. But one time Kelechi Amadi became one of the best water colourists in Nigeria. It’s your passion, so you deal with it. Art is creativity, so it comes from the within. Yes it is good to study it … but that doesn’t stop someone who is not a professional artist to move his passion.”
