Nigeria in 2010: Economy may suffer setback

  1. Nigeria’s inclusion in the list of countries aiding terrorism may cause a major econmic set back to the country.

AfricaNews reporter went on the street of Abuja, the federal capital territory of Nigeria to feel the pulse of Nigerians on the impact of US inclusion of Nigeria on the terrorist list.

Most respodents are concerned over the consequences of US economic relationship with Nigeria. “I think 2010 will not be favorable economically because Nigeria still depends on crude oil as its may foreign exchange earner and ofcourse as you know US is Nigeria’s biggest oil importer, so its going to strain Nigeria’s ability sell crude ol to the US” Funmi Ishola, a staff in the federal Ministry of Solid Minerals.

Africanews also spoke to a few government officials who for official reasons prefers to be anonymous. “I am particicular about foreign diplomacy. It is abovious that we are in a row with the US because of the attempt by a Nigerian to blow up the December 25th Detroit bound US plane. Nigerian government must take serious action in convincing the US government of its support for anti-terrorism. We will loss a lot of respect and suffer economic set back if do not sort out this issues on time.

At the moment Nigeria sells about 2500 barrel of crude oil every day with US as the major buyer.

“Apart from economic loss, the decision of the US will determine how other rich countries will do business with Nigeria “ says Akinremi Toluwani, a Student at the University of Portharcourt.

United States President, Barrack Obama recently listed Nigeria as one of the 14 countries that is promoting terrorism. The consequence is that Nigerian will be subjected to severe scrutiny at US aiports. This also implies a shrink in diplomatic cooperation between the US and Nigeria.
