In a deliberate effort to secure safety working environment and a comprehensive protection of the rights of employees in public and private companies, Nigeria government through the National Social Insurance Trust Fund, NSITF, is championing the adoption of the Employment Compensation Scheme, an Act that was signed to Law in 2010 to ensure an inclusive protection of employees in both public and private organizations.

The Chairman of the NSITF, Dr. Ngozi Olejeme, is optimistic the scheme will put an end the unchecked and poor conditions of local and Multinational Corporation in Nigeria. “We are putting in place a strong and sound social security program that will reflect international best practice” Olejeme, said when the policy is fully unwrapped, it will raise confidence for the workforce and palliative for economically vulnerable persons in Nigeria.
Employers of labour operating in Nigeria shall subscribe to the Social Insurance Scheme, covering its entire workforce with categorized premium subscription made; the NSITF shall undertake responsibilities of ensuring quality workplace environment and requisite compensation in cases of work related injuries or death. But the policy is edged on the preventive rather than the curative. “We don’t want to wait until accident happens, so our priority would be to ensure safe working environment and favourable condition of work” Olejeme hints.
As a driving force on President Jonathans’ agenda for a robust and healthy workforce, Olejeme insists that the Employment Compensation Scheme could serve as just pilot for the more desired social security program for economically vulnerable persons in the society.
