Nigeria bets on DRC peace talks

    Hopes have been expressed in the ongoing mediation talks on the crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Nigeria's President Yar'Adua said African Union's Peace and Security Council is keen on resolving it. He disclosed Nigeria as current head of the Council would see to an amicable settlement.

    AU mediators including Paul Kagame of Rwanda are currently in a crucial talk in Kenya’s capital Nairobi to find a lasting solution to the conflict in DRC.

    According to the Daily Independent newspaper, Yar’Adua said at the end of the 4th German-African Forum on Sunday in Abuja that he is confident the talks would be positive. He added: "I believe that with the ceasefire holding on now and efforts being made by regional leaders including our own former President Olusegun Obasanjo, a UN special envoy, a solution would be found and the situation would not deteriorate. ''

    Rebel leader Laurent Nkunda claims he is fighting a war to protect the minority Tutsi from the FDLR Rwandan Hutu rebel group. He has accused the DRC military of supporting the rebel group.
