Nigeria announces new election date

    Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC released a new revised time table and schedule of electoral activities for the country's 2011 general election.

    Chairman of INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega announced that presidential election would now take place on April 9, 2011; National Assembly elections on April 2, 2011; and Governorship and State Assembly elections for 16th of April, 2011.

    Under the new time table, in the event of a need for a run-off, the new poll would be conducted within 7 days after the announcement of the result of the affected election. This goes for governorship positions and office of the president.

    Political parties are to begin public campaign on the 1st of December, 2010 and end 24 hours before election date. Parties are to begin the process of selecting their candidates from 26 November.

    For voters, registration for the elections would hold between 15th and 29th January, 2011 while the official voters’ register would be published 2nd March, 2011.
