Nigeria: Rebels rescue Lebanese national

    A militant group - Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND) - has rescued a Lebanese national after being taken hostage for three days. Gun men kidnapped Melad Nasari of the Homans Construction Company on Wednesday, This Day newspaper reported.

    According to the report, Gbomo Jomo, spokesman for MEND said in a statement that a commando unit from MEND conducted a successful rescue of Nasari as promised, from deep inside the bush where he was confined by his abductors. MEND is a militant group which is fighting for what they described as a fair share of their oil wealth.

    He added: "During the course of the operation, they heard the frantic shout for help from an individual who introduced himself as Patrick Akorodu, a manager with Zenith Bank, Omoku branch in Rivers State. He said he was a victim of the criminal gang that abducted the Lebanese national. Both men are in the safe custody of our men and are now en route to the drop off zone where they will be handed to contacts from the State Security Service."

    It is still not clear which group was behind Nasari seizure and their intention behind the attack.
