Nigeria: Obasanjo’s wife passes on

    The wife of former Nigeria President Olusegun Obasanjo is dead. Retired Major Mojisola Adekunle-Obasanjo, who ran in the last Presidential elections on the ticket of the Masses Movement of Nigeria died at the age of 65. Adekunle-Obasanjo a mother of four died after battling a two month undisclosed ailment.

    Adetokunbo Abesanwa, daughter of the diseased told the Nigerian Daily Independent newspaper that her mother died on Thursday night at her residence in the Nigerian commercial capital of Lagos. "As I speak with you, I still cannot believe that my mother is gone. She was my pillar and a bundle of strength, even to the last moment. The vacuum she has left can never be filled," Abesanwa said.

    Top Nigerian politicians have expressed shock at the death of their colleague. Biodun Olujimi deputy Governor of Ekiti state said "I never met her in person, but she came across as a vocal, no nonsense person."

    Similarly, National Chairman of African Democratic Congress (ADC), Okey Nwosu described the late politician as a warm-hearted person, who according to him spoke for the masses throughout her campaign in 2007. "I recall her campaigns in 2007, and remember very well that she always represented the cause of the masses. She was passionate about the need to change the condition of the downtrodden in Nigeria. The Nigerian masses, who she represented, would miss her. I pray for her soul to rest in peace."

    Apart from being a politician, Adekunle-Obasanjo also served the Nigerian Army as a Radiologist from where she retired to go into politics according to the report. She will be missed by many Nigerians at home and abroad.
