The dare-devil armed robbers had stormed Kano in the early hours of Tuesday and literally murdered the relative peace enjoyed by the city in recent times.

The Robbers according the state commissioner of police Alhaji Muhammad Aminu Yusufu during an interview with Africa news reporter in his office said “the Robbers attacked the Wapa bureau de change market in the heart of the city, carted away undisclosed amount of money and a laptop computer, which they abandoned later for the police in a series of fire exchanges that caused the death of six members of the Nigeria Police Force.

The commissioner said the armed robbery syndicate had dealt a blow on Kano which "has hitherto enjoyed relative peace". He said the armed robbers invaded Wapa market at about 2:30am where they broke into eight stalls. Yusufu explained that before they made their way into the market, the armed robbers had attacked some policemen at their duty post by the market.

According to him, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and a sergeant were gunned down at that point. He said police officers from Sabon Gari market who heard shootings went to the area as reinforcement but before they reached there the robbers had laid ambush and killed two of them.

Yesufu said the bandits took away two rifles and a walkie-talkie from the policemen. According to him, on bringing the incident to his knowledge, he ordered for the closure of all exit points from Kano in order not to allow the criminals to escape. He said there was another fire-fight around Zaria road, where two more police officers were killed.

However, the commissioner said, the police shot down two of the robbers in the final fire exchange, which saw the robbers fleeing from two of their vehicles, abandoning the money and the laptop computer they seized from the market, as well as their personal belongings.

The police also recovered four AK 47 rifles, as well as two operational vehicles from the robbers. The vehicles recovered from the robbers included a Chrysler 300 car with plate number KJ408AAA (Lagos) and a Peugeot 406 with plate number AA 800 WWR (Delta).

The money recovered by the police included Saudi Riyals, American dollars, and notes from different countries, including Kenya, Mauritius, South Korea and Eritrea, as well as the naira. Other items found with the robbers included clothes, shoes, books, lighters and other sundry items.

The Nigeria Inspector General of Police describes the accident as a target and the police authority would do every thing to bring the robbers to book.
