Nigeria: Adebayor is Africa’s best player

    Togo and Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor has been named Glo-Caf Footballer of the Year ahead of Egypt's Mohammed Aboutrika and Ghana's Michael Essien. Adebayor won for helping his English premiership side Arsenal and his national side. He dedicated the award to his mother who was there with him.

    Speaking after receiving the award the striker called on Africa to work together as they look forward to hosting the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

    West Africa on Tuesday night showed that they were on top of the football world in the African continent when they dominated the Glo-Caf Awards in Lagos, Nigeria.

    The event which is one of the biggest for the African continent and was viewed live in other African countries on DStv Supersport 3 saw Egypt, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Togo scoop the different awards.

    The only consolation for southern Africa came from South Africa who scooped the best woman footballer of the Year.

    South Africa’s woman footballer Alice Noko Matlou who plays for Brazilian ladies triumphed beating other nominees Genevova Anouma of Equatorial Guinea and Ngo Manyise of Cameroon.

    The award of Best Young Player under 23 went to Ivory Coast and Chelsea striker Salomon Kalou whereas National team of the Year went to Egypt.

    Egypt also triumphed as it produced best African coach of the Year Hassan Shehata, best inter-club player of the Year Mohammed Aboutrika and best club of the year Al Ahly.

    The fair play award went to Ivory Coast and the African legend award went to Nigeria’s Christian Chukwu.

    Nigeria also triumphed in Platinum award which went to its president and supporters club of the Year – national.

    There was also an award which went to eleven Africa’s finest and they included Idriss Kameni – Cameroon, Adebayor, Essien, Aboutrika, Sulley Muntari –Ghana, Nigeria’s Joseph Yobo, Cameroon’s Samuel Etoo and Ghana’s John Mensah.

    The show was also spiced up by performances from South Africa’s Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Senegal’s Yusuf Ndour, Nigeria’s P-Square and Togo’s King Mensah.
