Nigeria: Acting President dissolves Cabinet

  1. Nigeria’s Acting President, Goodluck Jonathan has finally dissolved the executive cabinet of the countries ministers. Jonathan announced the suspension of the cabinet in regular federal executive council meetings on Wednesday.

Speaking to journalists at the end of the meeting, Dora Akunyili, the outgoing minister of communications said the Acting president gave no reasons for the action.

In the meeting that lasted 7 hours, Akunyili says Jonathan thanked the ministers for the work of nation building but that they will have to be dropped. Jonathan might have acted the script on the minds of many Nigerians who believe that the cabinet inherited from ailing president Yar’dua was not loyal to the Acting President.

There has also been pressure from civil society and a section of the opposition parties that suggests that there is a strong cabal within the executive council that may be working against the decisions of the acting President.

In about two weeks Nigeria has experienced what some consider a political and religious crisis. This has increased the political instability in the country. In Jos, Plateau state, Northern Nigeria about 500 people were killed in what was described as an ethnic clash, more deaths are unrecorded on a daily basis.

These incessant crises have slighted shifted focus from the absence of President Yar’dua from office. The President after almost three weeks of returning from a 93 days officially unannounced medical trip to Saudi Arabia, he has not been seen by anyone, not even the acting President.

It is believed that the new cabinet will be made of people who will remain loyal to the acting President and this might eventually lead to the end of Yar’dua rule.
