New Trainer for Youth Awards in Sierra Leone

  1. The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports in collaboration with the Duke of Edinburgh Award International Africa Regional office organized a training of unit award leaders at the National Stadium Presidential Lounge with the theme: “Strategic Leadership and New Course” for unit award leaders.

Coordinator of the National Youth Award Scheme Alhaji M. Deen encouraged participants to deliberate fruitfully. Chairman of the National Youth Award Scheme Tony Morrison said the scheme was founded on the 10th of October by late president Siaka Probyn Stevens to encourage youths to be better leaders and to bridge the gap between the young and old.

Director of Youths, Anthony Koroma said the National Youth awards are taking on a new dimension for training unit leaders.

Formally opening the training, Deputy Minister of Education Youth and Sports Algassimu Jah, said the government of Sierra Leone “is putting together concrete programs to reverse the circumstances of our young people by involving them in decision making and creating employment opportunities for them (and) has established a National Youth commission as a means of promoting youth development issues all over the country”.

For this years’ training, teachers and institution workers are being trained as unit leaders and also award leaders. The trainer for this year is Zambian Martyn Matabushi, Program Manager for Duke of Edinburgh Award International Africa Regional office. The sixty participants are from the Western Area of Sierra Leone and are aged 14-25. Youths from Sierra Leone’s other three provinces will be involved in subsequent training.
