National Bank donates to quake victims

  1. NB donates to KA quake victims

    BY WATIPASO MZUNGU JNR

National Bank of Malawi (NB) on Thursday joined other corporate companies by donating tents and blankets worth K2 million to Karonga earthquakes victims.

This comes as a response to the call by government to individuals and organizations for assistance in aid of the people who have lost their property following the natural disaster that has left about five people dead and several others displaced.

NB Chief Marketing Officer Wilkins Mijiga explained that the disaster had not affected the people of Karonga alone, but the operations of the bank as well since some of its members of staff had their houses reduced to rubbles due to the quake.

“These are forces of nature and we don’t have means of stopping them; we can only try to minimize the pain of the aftermath,” said Mijiga.

“As a bank, we’re deeply concerned because people that have been affected are the very reason why NB exists in the district,” he added.

In her acceptance speech, Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs Lilian Ng’oma called for more support because the situation in Karonga has not normalized.

“People are still sleeping outside; and sleeping outside during rainy season is not a joke. That is why more assistance in terms of tents and blankets would play a significant role in shielding the victims, especially women and children from mosquitoes,” Ng’oma stated.

The donated items include 300 blankets and seven 6-man tents.
