Namibia: Ruling party in early lead

    Namibian President, Hifikepunye Pohamba's South West African People's Party Organization (SWAPO) has taken an early lead in the elections results announced so far by the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN).

    Namibia went to the polls last week Friday and Saturday to elect a new president and legislators but delays to announce the results on Sunday has raised claims of electoral malpractices and fraud.

    Namibian journalist, Nchengetai Kusemoh, said the announcement of the final results has been slow in the last 48 hours and that this has caused anguish among the opposition, that has threatened to take legal action if the results are further withheld.

    By midday yesterday, the ECN could only announced verified results from four constituencies, according to Kusemoh.

    Nambia, considered as one of Africa’s most democratic states, has 107 constituencies, many of which are considered as SWAPO strongholds.

    Kusemoh told Africa News on phone: “There are still no final results up to now. People are still waiting here. Otherwise, in the parliamentary category, SWAPO is leading with 6,479 votes, followed by National Unity Democratic Organization of Namibia with 1,719 and Rally for Democracy and Progress with 1,525 votes”.

    Preliminary statements from international electoral observers have declared the Namibian vote as free, fair, transparent and democratic. Detailed reported are expected later Tuesday and Wednesday.
