4 July. Nairobi was on fire this weekend with national and international musicians gathering for what was called the SAWA SAWA CONCERT! Sawa sawa is local slang for "it’s ok" and it was more than ok according to me, it was FANTISTIC to say the least.
The concert was a 2 day affair on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd and since living in Nairobi now for a year and a half, I was delighted to see the turn up of Nairobi’s international community, it was excellent, everyone was on One Love Mode, joyful I tell you.
Being a South African, concerts are exciting in Jozi because of the music line up, but never family friendly, meaning one seldom brings their kids to festivals , because there is always an aggressive, dangerous rowdiness that may turn the day into a disastrous one e.g kids go missing or there is gun shots. It was truly great to experience such a beautiful family vibe at a concert of that magnitude. Kids where well entertained with jumping castles and clowns everywhere, parents where chatting with old and new friends, music was relaxing and smooth, it was great. And the best was that one felt that the kids are SAFE, no parent was paranoid about their kids playing with other kids or running around a little, it was a true pleasure.
As for the music Hugh Masekela took the day on Saturday and Burning Spears on the Sunday. These two bands where the main attractions, and they did not disappoint at all.
Being South African,I was especially proud and happy with Hugh Masekela, he really blew us off with his classic hits such as Stimela, and the old man can get down I mean for a 70 something man he really gets down. He also took the opportunity to share some of his wisdom as one of the prominent freedom fighters in the music industry during the apartheid years. Yes Hugh the consciousness continues!
Anyway appreciation to the organizes and sponsors of these 2 day superb concerts big ups to Sarakazi- keep doing what you do, otherwise Nairobi would be dreary!
