Mutharika maintains zero tolerance stance on corruption


  1. Malawian president Bingu Wa Mutharika has maintained that his government is determined to rooting corruption in the country.
    Speaking at events marking the anti-corruption day in Malawi Mutharika admitted that while his government has been doing its best to root out corruption, the country continued to have a high rate of corruption.
    “The fight to corruption has been lost because when the Political administration fires a corrupt civil servant, there is usually a political out cry “he said.
    He gave an example of unfair relief disbursement in Karonga district which was recently stuck by a series of earth quakes and blamed the international donor community of leniency to local Non Governmental organizations that are too corrupt.
    Mutharika took a swipe at the judicially which he described as ‘very corrupt’ despite its important role in the fight against corruption.
    “We have corruption all over we hear of injections being given overnight do we have courts open at night; this is clear corruption, “he said.
    Speaking earlier Minister of Justice and Constitutional affairs Peter Mutharika it wasn’t an easy tusk to root out corruption in Malawi but Mutharika took a stance to fight corruption.
    “Most of the politicians were resistant of fighting the corruption poison, corruption is like a conspiracy but this government set up a mechanism to fight corruption, “said Mutharika.
    He said the zero tolerance decoration in 2007 was a mile stone in rooting the problem.
    Malawi is currently stands at number 89 from 11 in 2004 on the corruption index according to a recent research by Transparency International.
