ZIMBABWE President Robert Mugabe has expressed his condolences to the Republic of Zambia and the Mwanawasa family following the untimely death of Zambian president Levy Mwanawasa on Tuesday.

In a statement to the Zambian vice president Mr Rupiah Banda, President Mugabe said he had learnt with profound shock and sorrow of the untimely death of a brother and a colleague.
"President Robert Mugabe would like to convey his heartfelt condolences on behalf of government and the people of Zimbabwe," read an excerpt of the statement adding that Zimbabwe shares Zambia's sorrow during this time of mourning.
President Mwanawasa passed away on Tuesday in France after suffering a second stroke on the eve of the African Union summit in Egypt in early July.
Mwanawasa was airlifted to France during the African Union summit and since then the Zambian leader was in hospital.
The Zambian leader who is a lawyer by profession had despised the re-election of Robert Mugabe in the June 27 presidential run off after an orgy of violence and described the whole election as scandalous. His nemesis Morgan Tsvangirai had pulled out because of the increased violence against his supporters.
Despite his condolences to Zambia, Robert Mugabe's government was portraying Zambia as a puppet of the West because of his anti- Mugabe stance.
Mugabe ahead of the African Union summit said let anyone point a finger at me because of the discredited presidential election run off but none of the African leaders managed to accuse president Mugabe of the atrocities he committed in the run up to the run off elections.
