Metal Works Limited assists government in healthcare deliver

  1. Metal Works Limited, a Malawian registered private sector institution, has been commended for improving the lives of rural communities through the construction of medical facilities and improved perks for its labour force.
The company has been helping government in the construction of public healthcare delivery systems at subsidised fees, when other companies are charging prohibitive prices.
This has prompted Minister of Health Moses Chirambo and his Labour counterpart Yunus Mussa to hail the company, saying its efforts were helping alleviating poverty for both the arbun and rural poor.
"This is one of the very few companies living the talk on corporate social responsibility. Others are busy exploiting Malawians," said Mussa.
Chirambo concurred with Mussa, saying while most private sector institutions were busy 'organising cocktails for company bosses, Metal Works Limited was considering the poor through its fair pricing and services'.
"This is what Malawi wants: development conscious companies. Imagine, this comapny only started in 2008, but (it) has managed to rise above profit orientation and think development," said Chirambo.
Metal Works Limited Managing Director, Rogerio Marques, said his company was happy to contribute towards Malawi's social-economic development.
"In fact, we are only only helping government; we are also doing something to motivate our workforce and reduce poverty. Imagine, while other companies are complaining about the global financial crisis, we have managed to raise the salaries of our employees by almost 400 per cent. Others have benefitted from a 200 per cent pay rise and we will continue to do this," said Marques.
Malawian workers often complain of poor perk, while their rural counterparts often cry wolf over lack of social and health amenities.
Marques said Metal Works Limited was trying to change all that by complementing government's efforts.
