Christmas is still a month away but private people and organizations in Meru, Kenya, are rushing to book tents and chairs for their parties. In fact, the mode in which people organize parties in Meru has really improved due to the introduction of tents and chairs business. Tents are mostly used when the event is conducted in open air to prevent people from direct sunlight, rains and strong winds thus making people calm until the end of the ceremony.
The business was started by a group of women with the aid of MESICS, a charity based in Holland through the women department in the Catholic Church(Meru Diocese) led by Sr.Gemma Kathure. The group consisting of 100 has tremendously increased the number of tents and chairs hence making it the major supplier in the greater Meru region.
According to the project manager Mrs Zipporrah Ariithi, the group has so far purchased a 1 acre piece of land, opened a soap making institution and given free seeds and fertilizers to its members with the profits they make from the business. With tent storage being the main challenge, the group intend to build storing facilities in the 1 acre piece of land but in the mean time willing members are cultivating the farm before construction starts.
Meanwhile, tents and chairs business has created job opportunities among the youths who are employed during occasions to set them up and also to those who maintain their cleanliness.
‘Since these tents are white in colour we must ensure that they are extra clean to attract more customers’, Zipporah smilingly said. She said that through the competition is high, they are able to capture more of their customers through public relations. Tents were hereby used to keep the public cool during the Nazareth Sisters fund raising of their house which was involved in a fire tragedy on 7th may 2009.
