Man dismembers himself after an HIV positive test

    A 23 year old man in the Southern Malawian district of Neno Sunday decided to dismember himself after an HIV positive test.
    The Man Peter Bonzo was later treated at Neno rural hospital.
    Simon Phatiko a resident of Mwingitsa village in the district told Africa news Bonzo became so worried after the HIV positive result and he could not believe that he really had contracted the virus.
    “He was very worried of the HIV positive result to the point that he started hating himself of the tests outcome, “Said Phatiko.
    When visited at his Kasamba village the man who migrated to Malawi as a refugee said that he wanted to die as he could not face the reality of dying with HIV and AIDS related disease.
    The man has since been counseled and revealed that he regrets the decision.
    Malawi Network of Journalists Living with HIV Chair Person David Kamkwamba has since described the incident as a pointer that HIV and AIDS discrimination sill persists in Malawi.
    “For some one to hate himself to the extent of dismembering himself it really shows that there is need for a lot of sensitization on the evils of HIV and AIDS based stigma, “he said.
    Malawi has close to 1 million people positively living with HIV and out of these 250,000 has ever been put on Anti Retroviral Treatment.
    Civil society activists have however said that the pandemic continues to take a toll in the country because of the high level of stigma in communities.
