Malawians to cough more on new passport

    Malawians are expected to cough more money on the yet to be introduced new passport which is set to have more security features.

    Media reports in the southern African country said that holders of the Malawi passport and new applicants are expected to pay 15, 100 Malawi Kwacha for the important document whose fee has gone up by 89 percent.

    Malawians previously were paying 8,000 Malawi Kwacha for the passport.

    The Malawi Immigration decided to introduce the new passport following reports that the fake Malawi passports were being used by foreigners.

    According to the country's gazette, the government endorsed new price for the passport on February 5 following recommendations from Immigration.

    Reports said that the Malawi Immigration department increased the minimal fee for general passport from K8, 000 to K15,100, representing an 89 percent increase.

    With the total number of 500,000 passport holders in the country currently out of a 13.1 million population, it is expected that the department will collect about 7.5 billion Malawi Kwacha in revenue once the transition to the new passports is completed.

    The Malawi Immigration Department announced the introduction of new security features on the passports, which means that it will start recalling for all old passports. The department had stopped issuing new passports following the move.
