Malawi schools for improved nutrition

  1. An organization has been formed in Malawi in the name national Nutrition HIV and AIDS.
On the skeleton the body has for a start short listed 540 secondary schools in the country to benefit from a nutrition project whose aim is to under run the impact of HIV AIDS.
Acting Executive Director for the organization Benjamin Chirwa told journalists that they decided to target schools after noting that most schools were not largely benefiting from nutrition and Aids treatment projects initiated by various stakeholders.

“Through the project we are going to have groups of students in the selected schools. Each group will have eight members and these members will act as pioneers of this project. They will be empowered to promote and encourage people living with the virus to be on nutritional diet,” Chirwa said.

He said apart from promoting and supplying nutritional foods to the beneficiaries which include people of all ages, the organization would also be offering scholarships.

The scholarships are in three categories, one for three years, the second one is of two years and the last one is of one year. These scholarships will be either international or national depending on the choice of the beneficiaries.

Chirwa cited Robert Break Secondary School as one of the schools currently benefiting from the project, which offers another dimension in the fight against the pandemic.

“Basically, we noted that in schools there is poor diet and this offers little hope for those living with Aids. Through out the project our aim is to ensure that the beneficiaries are able to prolong their lives a little longer buy eating nutritional foods,” he said.
