Malawi opposition pay hommage to fallen freedom hero

  1. Malawi's Former president and opposition party leader Bakili Muluzi in a company of his collegue John Tembo paid homage to fallen freedom fighter Chakufwa Chihana.

The two visited his family and his resting place in the northern province of Malawi before holding a political rally in a city called Mzuzu.

The rally was part of their jolint campaign to woo voters in the presidential as well as parliamentary scheduled for May19.

Muluzi who ruled from 1994 to 2004 before handing over to Mutharika is helping Tembo wrestle power from the incumbent whom he accuses of being insubordinate and ungrateful to him as Malawi's political godfather.

Tembo is standing for both his party Malawi Congress Party as well as Mmuluzi's United Democratc Front (UDF).

Muluxi said he is ready to support Tembo forever.

The eloquent Muluzi described himself asa “king maker” sa ying he would do everything to ensure that President Bingu wa Mutharika is ousted in the forthcoming May 19 polls.

Muluzi also boasted that his political strategies never failed.

Mutharika ascended to power via a UDF ticket but quit the party to form DPP after disagreements with Muluzi.

“People conversant with politics know and agree that honourable Tembo and me are political elephants," he said.

Senior Church Synod leaders attended the rally.

Muluzi said his first five years in power were far much better than what Mutharika has done, describing the incumbent’s five year term as a stagnation of development.

On his part, Tembo said it was sad that some people disrespect Muluzi “who deserves the best of respect as a former head of state”.

“Let us all thank atcheya [Muluzi]. Without him we could not have been here and enjoy such a large and record crowd,” he said while bashing media critics who doubted both the alliance and his claims that he is a changed man.
