Malawi's top boxer Wilson Masamba on Sunday made another remarkable point in the country's boxing industry when he defeated Tanzanian boxer Mataslim Mwakabyabya. Mwakabyabya surrendered in the fifth round a non-title bout held in Malawi's capital Lilongwe.

The country’s local daily of the Daily Times reported Tuesday that the Tanzanian boxer gave his fans false hopes in the first two rounds before surrendering in the fifth round.

The local daily further said Mwakabanga failed to match the Malawi boxer in both skill and intelligence and that at one time he resorted to holding.

Masamba is one of the best boxers in the Warm Heart of Africa.

Malawi’s Boxing Association (Maba) General Secretary Henry Sakala said he was not amused with the bout observing that it lacked the spark of an international bout.

“The fight was boring and frankly speaking it lacked that spark of an international bout. The Tanzanian only performed in the first two rounds and then resorted to holding,” said Sakala.

Meanwhile Malawi’s Kenya based athlete Lucia Chandamale won gold in Italy while another athlete Chancy Master set a new record in the 2008 Beijing Olympics preparatory Avellino race held at Tirrenia Olympic Training Centre in Italy last Wednesday.

The Kenya based athlete won the championship in 3,000 metres after clocking 9:48 minutes while Master finished fourth in 15,000 metres for 3:42.73 minutes.
Chandamale and Master who are set to represent Malawi at the Beijing Olympics having been attending training at Edorado High Performances centre in Kenya since last year.

Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) General Secretary Haxson Chapasa confirmed to the country’s local daily of the Nation of the results.

The Southern African country is sending four athletes to the Beijing Olympic Games on solidarity as none are yet to earn the standard qualification time. The country is sending two swimmers and two runners.
