Malawi: Vessel fails to dock at Nsanje Port

    The much-awaited first barge that was expected to dock at Nsanje World Inland port in the Southern Malawi to coincide with its grand opening failed to dock.

    President Bingu wa Mutharika who invited Zimbabwe and Zambia Presidents, Robert Mugabe and Rupiah Banda respectively to the grand opening of the historical port attributed the failure of the barge to Mozambican government.

    “The barge is stuck somewhere near in Mozambique due to unfinished business,” explained Mutharika.

    The failure of the barge to dock came days after the Mozambican authorities were reported to be unhappy with Malawi’s insistence to use the waterway in the absence of economic viability and environment assessment surveys.

    Mozambican President Armando Guebuza, who is a strategic partner in the project did not attend the opening ceremony and was represented by his Minister of Defense and the country’s Deputy High Commissioner to Malawi.

    The second phase of the port project will start next year and it is expected that warehouses, administration block and the airport will be constructed.

    Once completed, the waterway will cut imports and export transportation costs by 60 percent.
