The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in Malawi led by Bingu Wa Muthalika is having an early lead in the parliamentary and presidential elections. So far the verified results give him a comfortable lead over his main contender John Zenasi Ungapake Tembo of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

Early results released this morning indicate that Muthalika has taken an 87.33 percent lead against Tembo's 10.21 percent.

Making the announcement Malawi Electoral Commission Chairperson Anastazia Msosa said that these were verified results from centres that had finished the counting process.

She said there were some centres that had finished counting the poll results, but the commission was not in a position to announce them as they had some minor arithmetical mistakes.

"The results that we are reading here are from very few centres that we have verified," said Msosa.

Speaking earlier the chief Elections Officer at the Malawi Electoral Copmmission, David Bandawe said that there were some centres that had sent results with some minor arithmetical problems, but he assured the observers at the centre that more results will be coming in the klate morning hours of Wednesday.

However, results monitored on the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) indicate that Muthalika is having an easy lead over his strong contender, Tembo following accordingly.

In another development one of Muthalika's close aids Davis Katsonga who was minister of labour in the recently dissolved parliament is facing very strong competition from his political rival Nicholus Dausi, whom he beat in the DPP priminary elections.

Results from Mwanza central constituency indicate that Dausi who was dismissed from the DPP after deciding to contest as an independent candidate is having an early lead over Katsonga.
