A Malawian Davis Mpanda, 29, has been convicted and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for having sex with a 15-year-old boy.

Mpanda was arrested on January 25 at a trading centre near the commercial capital Blantyre, for having “carnal knowledge with a person against the order of nature,” reported The Nation newspaper of Malawi.

Lunzu Magistrate, Diana Kamwangala, said that same-sex is “a serious offence” in the country which criminalizes homosexuality.

The Magistrate also noted that “such offences are on the rise in Malawi.”

“The offences are against Malawi’s moral values. The convict is an abuser because what he did to the juvenile is sexual corruption,” Magistrate Kamwangala said in the ruling.

    Psychological trauma

“Because of the psychological trauma which the boy will live with for the rest of his life, this court therefore sentences the convict to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour,” she said.

Deputy government spokesman, Kingsley Namakwa has said that gays must be more open – despite the fact they can be imprisoned for 14 years.

Speaking after a police arrested 21-year-old Peter Sawali for putting up gay posters in Blantyre, Namakhwa who is deputy information minister urged other gay people to come out.

“As far as the Malawi government is concerned we only have two gays in Malawi – Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga. If there are others, let them come out in the open.”

However, he said those who would come out would be arrested in line with the southern African country’s laws.

Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga have become the faces of gay equality in the African country after they were arrested for holding a traditional wedding ceremony last December.

They have twice been denied bail and are pleading not guilty to charges of gross indecency.

I wonder why my taxes from Britain are sent to support this backward and bigoted country? Perhaps it's time for the foolish and ignorant Honourable Kingsley Namakwa to visit South Africa: how does he square their treatment of all its citizens as equal with his own state's medieval imbecility?

This really makes me wonder the genuineness of the Bible. The westerners brought the Bible to us with all these rules which we have made Gospel and try to live by and now they are back saying whatever we stated for you to believe is all nonsense. Please, dont play with people's minds in this way. as much as you may think, BELIEF IS POWER, its is more powerful than anything else out there...

so make up your mind... Is the Bible real or was it someone's wet-dream which has now backfired??? If not, then let The Word be. Homosexual remains a sin as far as the Bible is concerned or any other religious book, for that matter.

so i guess the matter here is to decide how to deal with these SINS because none of us is free of sin. accepting them as The Norm, does not work, as it just leads MAN to destruction, regardless of what "International Laws" state. Let our leaders not be short-sighted and seek instant gratification, but the ultimate idealism brought about by struggle and sacrifices for the greater good.

Personally, I think, making rules/Laws on emotional issues, especially sexual (unless its assault) is a very slippery slope, because everyone's perception of it is unique and neither is right nor wrong as long as it is consentual among adults and kept where it belongs, "behind closed doors". Anyone's sexual preferences or orientation or habits remain irrelevant / inappropriate, unless where one is considering such a relationship with another...
