Malawi: Gov’t threatens trade unions

    Malawi's Ministry of Labour has issued a statement warning the Malawi Congress of Trade Unions (MCTU) that it will bear costs for stern action government will take on Malawians should they hold protests.

    Minister Yunus Mussa, also said MCTU was not realistic in calling for the withdrawal of the proposed Pensions Bill, which, among other things, purports that pensioners collect their dues only after reaching the age of 50.

    "Government will hold MCTU responsible for any actions that may arise from its call. Ghe law will have to take its course," said Mussa in a live news broadcast on public Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).

    The development has seen a lot of civil servants throwing in their resignations before the bill is made into law.

    MCTU in a statement this week said it would pull out of the common trade discussion committee and would take undisclosed action if government did not rescind its decision to legitimise the pension bill.

    Many workers express ignorance about how the new bill would operate once made into a legal document, and many have resorted to leave the civil service in order to collect their pension dues.
